Traveling with kids… makes me tired just thinking about it… iPad, iPad, where are you!?
Reaching for a device is certainly the easy option. I often wonder, however, how many moments are missed by plugging our kiddos in.
Our family has *almost* done it all in the travel department, even with our infants: flying, camping (inside and outside), hiking, hotels, Disney (a trip on it’s own level), boating, the list goes on…
If you’re curious about reducing screen time on the road, or looking for screen-free family activities mid jet-stream, this post shares how our family handles travel unplugged (craziness included)!
Why We Ditched Screens
To be honest with y’all, I can not remember how my husband and I came to this decision initially. I do remember we both agreed before our first baby was born that our kids wouldn’t be “watching stuff”. I think we both knew we wanted to be present with each other as a family. We also wanted our kiddos to learn through experience with the world around them.
Ten years ago, when we made our decision, screens or no-screens wasn’t really a thing. However, as more studies report the effects of screen time on children, the more we know we are on the right track.
So, from the start, we leaped into unplugged parenting, even in our travels. It is not easy, but the rewards have been so worthwhile as we watch our babies grow and take in new adventures.

How do you Pack?
Are you one for just throwing a bunch of stuff in a suitcase and hoping for the best? Or are you a super planner? Somewhere in between?
For myself, I am somewhere in between. I do love some good control freak moments where I insist my daughter does NOT pack 32 bags with every piece of jewelry she owns. I don’t think this is too unreasonable…
Where do I give up some control? Packing the activity bag. It is beyond messy and makes my eye twitch just looking at it, but it’s theirs and full of things they are interested in. The more interest, the longer the quiet! Happy dance!
Here are some items my kiddos like to pack:
- Coloring, activity pages, notebooks (duh!)
- Legos
- Card games – NOT just the classics!
- Camera, not on a phone
- Animal or dinosaur figurines
This list seems so organized, yet their bags are not… Let it go, Jenn! Let. It. Go. Ahh!
Benefits of Boredom
Yes, you read that right!
The awesome part about an unplugged journey is the ample opportunity to adventure to new places with your family, and be able to experience new things through the eyes of your kiddos.
But let’s get real. During travel, boredom is a thing. This does come up from time to time in our family. And if I am being honest, I don’t think it is a bad thing. After I threaten to donate their obscene amount of toys (full transparency here!), they seem to snap back into reality.
Here are the usual go to’s to beat boredom on the go:
- Imagination play: This is their main go-to. You can be imaginative anywhere!
- Good ol’ travel games: Alphabet game, Eye Spy… the classics!
- Books on tape: No cassettes here, but Audible or Libby is our favorite.
- Hand motion songs: I don’t really know what to call them… the chanty song things they learn at school.
- Nap: I may have gotten the kid’s and I’s list mixed up.
On with the unplugged journey we go, boredom beat…sometimes.

Time to Relax… Maybe.
Going to new places is exciting! Whether you are traveling to see family, going on vacation, or even dragging the family along on a work trip, there is always something new to see.
While adults can <sometimes> control their excitement, kids can have a harder time. Here are some essential tips to screen-free family trips with a side of relaxation:
- Let the kids be loud in their excitement for a little – release the beasts!
- Lay the ground rules: Be respectful of others, and use your manners (that’s ours)
- List out the next 3 things your doing
- Establish a quiet space for breaks – for kids and adults!
- Try to keep to the normal sleep schedule
- Use those activity bags!
No matter what, everyone’s relaxation looks different. When it comes to our unplugged journeys, most of the time it comes down to good communication. Ask your spouse for a break if needed, set up clear boundaries for the kids, or announce you need time to relax. Need to sneak in a movie? No one is blaming you!
Just make sure you find time to look for the joy in where you are.
