Oh, the looks I get when I tell people our kiddos don’t know the latest kids TV show, or the trending YouTube shorts for little ones. You know… the smiles and nods. “O.M.G., you don’t know what ______ is!?” or “I don’t know how you do it!” They say.
Our choice is unconventional, yes, but not crazy as some may think. Screen-free parenting means no iPads, no YouTube, and no background TV. It also means building connections, fostering independence, and allowing imagination to grow.
Whether you’re curious about reducing screen time or looking for screen-free family activities, this post shares why we choose to live unplugged and all the benefits it can provide for your family.
Why We Ditched Screens
To be honest with y’all, I can not remember how my husband and I came to this decision. I do remember we both agreed before our first baby was born that our kids wouldn’t be “watching stuff”. I think we both knew we just wanted to be present with each other as a family. We also wanted our kiddos to learn through experience with the world around them.
Ten years ago, when we made our decision, screens or no-screens wasn’t really a thing. However, as more studies were reporting the effects of screen time on children, the more we knew we were on the right track.
So, from the start, we leaped into unplugged parenting. It is not easy, but the rewards have been so worthwhile as we watch our babies grow.

What is Unplugged Parenting?
Ok, lets address the elephant in the room! “You are preaching about no screens for your kids, but you’re using screens to write a blog.” Maybe this explanation can help clarify:
Unplugged parenting means raising kiddos without the use of screens as entertainment or digital babysitters. It’s not anti-technology. I repeat… It is not about anti-technology—it’s about being intentional. We want our kids to experience the world with wide eyes, dirty hands, and open hearts—not through a tablet.
Our Focus:
- Intentional family time
- Screen-free play
- Nature-based activities
- Creative indoor fun
- Real-world learning
We still use technology for work and communication, but our kids aren’t dependent on screens to stay happy.
Benefits of a Screen-Free LifeStyle
I am not here to tell you you are a bad parent for allowing your kids on screens. No, no, no! My goal is to share our imperfect journey, and maybe encourage some along the way in theirs.
Here are some benefits that ditching screens has created in our home:
- More connection: We talk, laugh, and work together as a family.
- Improved behavior: Less screen time means fewer tantrums and better self-regulation.
- Greater creativity: Our kids have become masters of imaginative play.
- Better sleep: Without screens, bedtime is smoother and more restful.
- Increased independence: Kids AND parents both need their freedom.
Our goal is meaningful family time without screens. And honestly, what could be better than that!?

What We Do Instead of Screens
People often ask, “But what do your kids do all day without screens?” The answer is: so much!
I would like to say we have built a routine around screen-free family activities, but really, this is just what my kiddos are used to by now. Their life in a nutshell:
- Nature walks and backyard adventures
- Baking and cooking together
- Crafting and open-ended art projects
- Reading aloud and storytelling
- Family board game nights
- Helping with chores (oh boy, do they ever!)
These moments are so simple, and when you get the hang of it, it is so so easy! We are trying to nurture connection, creativity, and (lots and lots of) confidence.
Dealing With the Social Pressure
Let’s be honest: choosing an unplugged lifestyle often goes against the grain. Birthday parties with iPads, family dinners with TVs, and even babysitters who ask, “What shows do they like?”
We’ve learned to set boundaries kindly and consistently. We bring our own screen-free travel kits, offer alternatives at social gatherings, and explain our values without judgment. It’s not about being perfect—it’s about staying aligned with what matters most.
